CASA of Monterey County

Training of CASA Volunteers

Because we believe that our volunteers will best serve the children who need them through comprehensive training and continuing education, CASA of Monterey County is committed to providing an excellent and thorough training program.

The CASA of Monterey County program has adopted and adheres to both the National CASA and local criteria for the initial training of Court Appointed Special Advocates. In addition we provide continuing case supervision and offer monthly educational forums. Some of these educational programs are open to the public; others are exclusively designed to address the concerns and needs of our CASAs.

Through a comprehensive 30-hour training program volunteers are equipped with the necessary skills and information to serve as a voice for the child. For detailed information on the training process and the areas covered, please click here.

Briefly, the training process includes -
  1. 30 hours of dynamic instruction with guest lecturers and hands-on activities that mirror the work of a CASA.
  2. Each trainee will observe at least one (four hour) morning or afternoon session of juvenile court.
  3. A CASA training manual incorporating basic materials from the National CASA training curriculum with supplemental material specific to California and Monterey County.
While it is required that an advocate trainee attends all training sessions, personal schedules are accommodated and arrangements are made to make up missed sessions. Upon successful completion of training, candidates will participate in a final interview and then be sworn in as an officer of the court by the presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court of Monterey County.
